Guisborough NPT - Continue to tackle retail crime

I wanted to pass on some news of continued work by myself and the neighbourhood team, as we continue to tackle retail crime in our town. We have targeted repeat/prolific offenders, arrested them and charged them to court. We will continue to work with our retail stores to combat the rise of retail theft. 

One offender in the past month has received a 8 month custodial sentence for a recent shoplifitng spree in Guisborough. 

A very recent offender was arrested and dealt with at Teesside Magistrates Court. The below message is from our Inspector:

Guisborough’s neighbourhood policing Inspector is reassuring local businesses that officers will continue working with them to crack down on retail crime and make the town a safe and enjoyable place to shop and spend leisure time

This comes as a 20-year-old man pleaded guilty at court yesterday (Thursday 2nd July) to a dozen shop thefts, and possession of a Class B drug.

Retailers had reported that Callum Briggs had recently stolen stock with a combined value of nearly £1, 500.

The goods included high value steaks, crisps, biscuits and energy drinks – with Briggs often returning to stores more than once in the same day.

Inspector Neil Deluce from Redcar & East Cleveland NPT said: “We’d been making concerted efforts to locate this man over a few days, attending numerous addresses until he was located on Wednesday. We then interviewed him about a large number of retail theft offences and charged him to court the next day

“I’m pleased to update the town’s businesses and residents that Briggs pleaded guilty at court and he was issued with fines, a community order, ordered to attend drug rehabilitation courses, and he is also subject to exclusion areas of specific shops for well over a year.

“I want to reassure the local business community again that we take retail crime seriously and that with their help and support, we’ll continue to take action against offenders.”
